Cosette Wheeler, PhD, is a Regents Professor and the Victor and Ruby Hansen Surface Chair in Translational Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Her interests over the past 30 years have spanned many facets of HPV-related disease, including development of HPV diagnostics, HPV molecular variation, host and viral genetic risk factors, and natural history. She has overseen a number of large-scale multidisciplinary studies to facilitate HPV vaccines and HPV testing for primary and secondary cervical cancer prevention. Since 2006, she has led a state-wide surveillance program that represents a one-of-a-kind public health and health informatics resource for the United States, transcending health care organizations, clinical practices and individual providers. The New Mexico HPV Pap Registry (NMHPVPR) program collects HPV immunization and cervical screening information statewide in New Mexico to assess HPV vaccine and cervical screening effectiveness. Dr. Wheeler directs two NIH-funded research centers including one of the five US Cooperative Research Centers in Sexually Transmitted Infections and the New Mexico HPV Outcomes, Practice Effectiveness and Surveillance (NM-HOPES) PROSPR Research Center.  In 2006 she received the American Society of Coloposcopy and Cervical Pathology Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award and served the leadership of President Obama’s 2012 Cancer Panel.
