Dr. W. Martin Kast holds the Walter A. Richter Chair in Cancer Research and is a Professor of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, USA. He is also the Director of the Beckman Center for Immune Monitoring and the Director of the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Tumor Microenvironment Program. His (pre-)clinical HPV research involves the design and testing of HPV therapeutic vaccines and immune modulators in animal models and clinical trials. His basic HPV research involves identifying viral immune escape mechanisms and viral entry pathways. He has published 260 articles, 140 of which on HPV. He holds 18 patents and is a member of the scientific advisory board of 6 biotech companies. In the past he also worked in the biotech industry. In 2013 he was elected as the secretary/treasurer of the International Papillomavirus Society. A documentary (Treeman meets Treeman) that features his research on HPV induced extreme warts is being broadcasted worldwide by Discovery Channel. This HPV research led to the 2015 BeHEARD and the 2016 Affymetrix prizes. In his spare time, he is an actor in scientist, doctor roles.
