Dr. Steinberg received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from Stony Brook University studying bacteriophages, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship studying the SV40 tumor virus. After two years at Columbia University as a Senior Research Associate, in 1980 she joined the Department of Otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (now part of Northwell Health) where she began her studies of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and their role in benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Those studies have been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1983. She is the author or co-author of 99 peer-reviewed publications and 25 book chapters, most related to HPV. Her research has been recognized by a number of awards, including the Elliot Osserman Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund, the Karl Storz Award from the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, the Israel Cancer Research Fund Award for Women of Excellence, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Papillomavirus Society and the Leonard Marsh Memorial Scientific Achievement Award from AWSM (Advancing Women in Science and Medicine). She is a Past President of the International Papillomavirus Society. Dr. Steinberg holds multiple positions within Northwell Health: Provost for The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.
