The IPVS Policy Committee has released a new statement examining the evidence behind treatments for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV-related disease.

As the statement makes clear, “no therapy has proven durable efficacy in eradicating human papillomavirus infection,” although “some topical agents can treat human papillomavirus-related lesions in selected settings.” Importantly, “viral clearance and lesion regression require distinct clinical end points” — a distinction that is often overlooked. The statement underscores that “clear scientific standards are needed to guide practice and policy.”

Led by Dr. Laila Sara Arroyo Mühr on behalf of the IPVS Policy Committee, with co-authors Chemtai Mungo, Kimon Chatzistamatiou, Shuk On Annie Leung, and Suzanne M. Garland.
