Dr. Neerja Bhatla is Professor Emeritus and former Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. She is Past Chairperson of the FIGO Committee for Gynecologic Oncology (2015-18), Past Secretary General, IFCPC and Past President, AOGIN.
Prof. Bhatla has professional experience of over 40 years. She has conducted trials on various aspects of cervical cancer prevention, with special reference to low resource settings including HPV epidemiology, HPV vaccination, screening and treatment. She is Consultant to WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and a member of the Technical Expert Group for WHO’s Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative.
In 2021, Dr. Bhatla was awarded the Shobha S. Wenger Distinguished Chair of Gynecologic Oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi and the FRCOG (ad eundem), UK. She was the recipient of the WHO-IARC Award for Women in Cancer Research, 2023. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Hon’ble President of India in 2025 for her work on cervical cancer prevention.
